Digital Workplace

What Is a Digital Workplace?

In a digital workplace, digital technology is embedded  in employee processes, workflow, and culture.

Due to the recency of the term, it may have different definitions depending on the context and the discussion.

Characteristics of a digital workplace usually include:

  • An emphasis on leveraging digital technology, whether or not the business is in the technology sector
  • Customer-centric, mobile-first mindsets
  • A cultural shift towards agile, data-driven business processes

To some, digital workplaces may also connote workplaces that are no longer tied to physical locations. Instead, the digital workplace is not a place, per se — it is simply a virtual environment that disparate employees and stakeholders can connect to.

There are a few benefits that digital workplaces entail:

  • Digital technology boosts productivity and efficiency across the board through automated, data-driven work processes
  • A variety of collaboration tools and platforms open up new possibilities for communication, permitting workforces that operate globally and asynchronously
  • Virtual work environments also offer new benefits for companies, who can hire and employ workers based on criteria other than physical location

Different companies and individuals likely define and implement the digital workplace in different ways.

However, it is clear that the digital workplace offers new benefits, possibilities, and opportunities. Companies undergoing digital transformation are likely to see more potentials emerge as technology continues to evolve.
