I\u2019m amazed when I look back and reflect on all of the things I\u2019ve learned so far.<\/p>\r\n<p>But when people ask me about the most important challenge for HR leaders to address during a Workday\u00ae implementation, I always go back to the same thing.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Culture.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Of course, transitioning to a new HCM is a big project \u2014 one that will inevitably have some effect on the organizational culture.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>What many leaders don\u2019t realize is the actual magnitude of this effect and all of the ways it changes the way teams and employees work.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Below I\u2019ve mapped out some of the main ways your Workday\u00ae implementation can affect organizational culture \u2014 for better or worse.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Your Workday\u00ae implementation isn\u2019t magic<\/h2>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_1059175031-1.jpg\" alt=\"workday implementation\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_1059175031-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_1059175031-1.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_1059175031-1.jpg?resize=600,400 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/>We all have high expectations for a transformation project of this scale, but it\u2019s important to remember that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/platform\/workday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Workday\u00ae<\/a> is a platform. It has the potential to add an entirely new level of capabilities to your workforce, but it\u2019s not a magic trick.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>If you simply copy and paste your old processes into your new HCM, not much will change.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>The opportunity to shift the culture in a positive direction lies in process creation.<\/p>\r\n<p>For example, maybe you currently lack a clear process for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/employee-onboarding-guide-hr-managers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">onboarding new employees<\/a>. We all know how critical it is to provide an engaging and productive onboarding experience. While you\u2019re customizing your Workday\u00ae system, you can use that opportunity to design and implement a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/learning-in-the-flow-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new onboarding model<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/hcm-implementation-5-tips\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=inlink&amp;utm_campaign=proceed_ratio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Dive Deeper: Don&#8217;t Attempt an HCM Implementation Before Addressing These 5 Concerns<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2>Process creation forces you to answer challenging questions<\/h2>\r\n<p>The example above describes a clear opportunity to improve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/employee-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee experience<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, designing some processes will raise new challenges to the surface \u2014 the effects of which can have a broad impact on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/what-is-organizational-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organizational culture<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>One thing our project team had to confront when designing our key processes on Workday\u00ae is deciding who will have visibility into what information.<\/p>\r\n<p>For example, at which level will managers be able to see employee salaries? Who will control the process of initiating promotions? Who will have visibility into an employee\u2019s performance review?<\/p>\r\n<p>When designing processes that answer these questions, you\u2019re not just making technical changes, you\u2019re making decisions that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/managers-digital-transformation-playbook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affect management<\/a> and hierarchies.<\/p>\r\n<p>You have to ensure your managers are prepared for this level of transparency and the new responsibilities that come with it. Otherwise, you\u2019ll face the consequences of information misuse and lack of accountability.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Empower your employees with a \u2018single source of truth\u2019<\/h2>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_628146863-1.jpg\" alt=\"Workday implementation\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_628146863-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_628146863-1.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/08\/shutterstock_628146863-1.jpg?resize=600,400 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/>One of the things I\u2019m most excited about in our Workday\u00ae implementation is finally having all of the resources employees need in one place.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the modern workplace, there\u2019s an urge to add as many apps and dashboards as possible.<\/p>\r\n<p>But when your information is spread out across a lot of disparate systems, the task of updating, monitoring, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/data-driven-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analyzing data<\/a> accurately becomes incredibly difficult.<\/p>\r\n<p>Imagine every time an employee has a question about the organizational chart, work calendar, or candidate referrals, they automatically ask an HR employee. By establishing Workday\u00ae as the single source of truth, you create a culture of self-service and empowerment.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Take a proactive approach to change management<\/h2>\r\n<p>Merging the functionality of many apps into one platform \u2014 Workday\u00ae \u2014 means employees have to say goodbye to systems that they\u2019re used to using.<\/p>\r\n<p>We realized that sunsetting these systems could generate a fair amount of anxiety and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/how-to-manage-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resistance among employees<\/a> throughout the organization. But by anticipating this in advance, we can also prevent it.<\/p>\r\n<p>By making user onboarding a top priority in the Workday\u00ae implementation process, we\u2019ll have a far better shot at avoiding resistance and providing the easiest possible transition.<\/p>\r\n<p>Just because a platform has powerful capabilities doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s intuitive or easy for employees to figure out on their own. At each touchpoint, we stop and ask, <em>how will this change affect our employees?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>It\u2019s imperative for HR leaders to remember that the success of your HCM \u2014 no matter which one you choose \u2014 is determined by its usage.
