It\u2019s interesting to note that in 2013, 1 billion smartphones were in use. Despite these tools\u2019 extraordinary capabilities, productivity gains are dwindling.\n\n<strong>At a time where superhuman capabilities are at our fingertips, why is employee productivity lagging?<\/strong>\n\nThis is the question David Mallon, Chief Analyst of Bersin, Deloitte Consulting, and Ofir Bloch, Director of Market Research &amp; Analyst Relations at WalkMe, answered in a recent webinar.\n\n<em><strong>Watch the full webinar here!<\/strong><\/em>\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QKmPK_tbLAs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<h2>Seven forces that are driving the digital workplace<\/h2>\nThere are seven forces that have the greatest impact on the way people work, David explained:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Technology<\/li>\n \t<li>Huge volumes of data<\/li>\n \t<li>AI, cognitive computing, and robotics<\/li>\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/robotic-process-automation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Automation<\/a> and its potential to displace human jobs<\/li>\n \t<li>Diversity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/generational-differences-software-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generational differences<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li>New demands for career development and employment value<\/li>\n \t<li>An explosion of gig job opportunities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nTechnology encompasses all of these.\n\n\u201cIt\u2019s everywhere. It is a tremendous source of value. But it\u2019s also, quite frankly, often just a distraction,\u201d said David. \u201cIt overwhelms us \u2014 it can get in the way if we\u2019re not careful.\u201d\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/employee-experience\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=inlink&amp;utm_campaign=proceed_ratio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dive Deeper: Employee Frustration is Destroying Your Employee Experience<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\nDespite thoughtfully crafted strategies intended to make technology implementations successful, many companies are not careful when it comes to understanding how these technologies can actually help \u2014 or hurt.\n\nConsequently, employees are forced to integrate a wave of platforms and apps into their workflows, often without fully understanding the purpose or how to use them at the optimal level.\n\nOperating in this \u201coverwhelmed\u201d state makes it nearly impossible to increase productivity.\n<h2>Employee \u2018overwhelm\u2019 is stifling your productivity<\/h2>\nWebinar attendees said they believe that employee productivity is crucial to their organization and something they are actively addressing, according to a poll.\n\nLost productivity is one of the most critical symptoms of employee overwhelm. The average enterprise has more than 300 mission-critical apps, meaning employees are tasked to gain proficiency on numerous platforms and systems.\n\nThe organization is also overwhelmed. Although people tend to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/digital-transformation-decoded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digital transformation<\/a> as one large-scale endeavor, it\u2019s really the combination of multiple transformations taking place at the same time. Your sales, marketing, finance, and HR department could each be pursuing digital transformations, without any coordination between them.\n\nHere\u2019s the hard math. If you multiply the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/part-we-didnt-tell-you-job-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overwhelmed employee<\/a> by the multiple transformations and the overwhelmed organization, you end up with a limited value realization, according to Ofir.\n<h3><em>Technology alone is not a productivity enabler<\/em><\/h3>\n\u201cTechnology should be the way organizations overcome challenges,\u201d said Ofir, \u201cnot the barrier itself.\u201d\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_644302267-1.jpg\" alt=\"employee productivity\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_644302267-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_644302267-1.jpg?resize=300,201 300w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_644302267-1.jpg?resize=600,400 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>\n\nIndeed, the capabilities all of these digital tools offer seem to promise higher efficiency, greater innovation, and novel business models. This is what drives companies to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into technology.\n\nBut access to software alone does not guarantee higher productivity. Webinar attendees identified three main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/4-barriers-to-organizational-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">barriers<\/a> to making successful use of their tech investments.\n<ul>\n \t<li>25.5% pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/change-6-strategies-overcome-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee resistance to change<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li>24.5% said management behavior doesn\u2019t adequately support change<\/li>\n \t<li>20.6% cited a lack of clarity around the need for new digital tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nEach of these obstacles has something in common: the human factor. Whether or not you choose software with your employees&#8217; needs in mind, provide them with enough support, and maintain transparency about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/5-types-of-organizational-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">need for the change<\/a> has little to do with technology and a lot to do with the human users.\n<h2>How to overcome the productivity paradox<\/h2>\nThere are three main issues that demand business leaders\u2019 attention in 2019. By focusing on these three things, you will position yourself to overcome the biggest barriers to productivity.\n<h3>1. Be data-driven<\/h3>\n\u201cWe\u2019ve got to get to know our workers, the workplace, and the work that they need to accomplish in much more detailed ways,\u201d said David. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/data-driven-company-data-warehouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">better data<\/a>, it\u2019s possible to identify where problems, challenges, and opportunities exist.\n\nWith better data, you can empower your employees to make better decisions faster, and in turn improve business outcomes.\n<h3>2. Be worker-centric<\/h3>\nBusiness leaders are surprised that employee productivity gains are dwindling. After all, the software they choose to implement is supposed to help their staff work more efficiently.\n\nBut while your decision to roll out a new tool, program, or process is intended to fulfill some business objective, \u201crarely do we step into the shoes of the workers themselves,\u201d said David. Supporting business goals is critical, but the approach you take must add to employees\u2019 ability to create value and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/employee-burnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support their well-being<\/a>.\n\n\u201cAre you somehow making [employees\u2019] lives better, or are you adding yet one more process or system to an already overwhelmed workforce and asking them to figure it all out for themselves?\u201d said David.\n<h3>3. Simplify processes<\/h3>\nWhen in doubt, simplify. If you realize your approach to change is hindering employees instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/inclusive-digital-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">empowering them<\/a>, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_1033103851-1.jpg\" alt=\"software onboarding\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_1033103851-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_1033103851-1.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/shutterstock_1033103851-1.jpg?resize=600,400 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>look for ways to simplify it.\n\nHeeding this advice will serve you well, but it\u2019s easier said than done. In a constantly evolving, tech-saturated business landscape, <em>how<\/em> can you ensure simplicity across the board?\n<h2>Safeguard productivity for all with WalkMe<\/h2>\nThe question of how to keep things simple and stress-free becomes exponentially more important when you\u2019re dealing with an enterprise-wide implementation.\n\nIn one WalkMe use case, a retailer was implementing SAP SuccessFactors across its workforce of 220,000 employees dispersed across the country.\n\nThe biggest challenge in this endeavor wasn\u2019t ensuring that HR professionals \u2014 the ones who would be using the platform most \u2014 could gain proficiency. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/software-onboarding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effective onboarding<\/a> is critical, the amount of time they will spend on the platform will push HR staff to pick it up faster.\n\n\u201cThe challenge is in the 80% of the organization that will only touch the system every once in a while,\u201d said David. \u201cIt\u2019s not really relevant to their world or job. The ActionBot is responsible for handling processes like completing transactions and answering basic questions so even first-time users can complete tasks on the platform with ease.\n\n<strong>As a result, the company realized a 70% reduction in support tickets.<\/strong>\n\nThis improvement makes it easy to see the business imperative for prioritizing digital adoption and ensuring productivity \u2014 there are dollar signs attached to this drop.
