When taken seriously (and I suggest we do), the impacts of these findings will have lasting implications for decades to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adp.com\/tools-and-resources\/adp-research-institute\/research-and-trends\/research-item-detail.aspx?id=D7376F79-6113-4294-BC2D-A698ACC0ED8B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revelations from Workforce Turnover. A Closer Look Through Predictive Analytics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was produced by ADP Research Institute. The ADP researchers used a sample size of 41,000 companies and 12.5 million employees to draw their conclusions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they found was that employee turnover, particularly voluntary departures, costs companies significant money, productivity, and morale. Thus arises the need to curb turnover and address the factors that contribute to it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/pages\/training-employee-turnover\/?eco=onboarding&amp;adin=voluntary-employee-turnover-ll01&amp;land=training-employee-turnover&amp;pitch=Employee-Productivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don\u2019t let employee turnover drain your company of valuable resources.<\/a><\/h3>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When does the most employee turnover occur?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_524761690.jpg\" alt=\"employee churn\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_524761690.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_524761690.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_524761690.jpg?resize=600,400 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all expect a degree of turnover in our organizations. It will happen throughout the year with a degree of seasonality. Nothing new here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the revelations from the report are quite staggering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s break down turnover rates by the numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost industries\u2019 turnover rates reach their highest level in September, the same as the national average,\u201d according to the report. \u201cThe rate of turnover for most industries reaches its lowest point in March. For manufacturing, that low point happens in January. Manufacturing also has the lowest turnover rate (3.4%) of all the industries observed and the difference between its highest and lowest points (1.3%) is the smallest of any of the industries. Compare this with the leisure and hospitality industry, where the proportion of part-time jobs is higher than for other industries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince part-time workforces tend to show less employee loyalty, this industry has the highest rate of turnover (9.1%) among all industries. The difference between the highest and lowest rates of turnover (5.6%) for leisure and hospitality is also the highest of the industries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now comes the kicker. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnalysis reveals the average monthly turnover rate to be approximately 5%. <\/span><b>About 60\u201370% of turnover in each industry is voluntary.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And because it is initiated by the employee, voluntary turnover is more difficult to predict.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>3 main findings on employee turnover<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_624905480.jpg\" alt=\"voluntary employee turnover\" width=\"933\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_624905480.jpg 933w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_624905480.jpg?resize=300,225 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 933px) 100vw, 933px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can simplify the report\u2019s key findings like this:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ol>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Employee turnover is a reality<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0There are industry variances<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Average monthly turnover is approximately 5%, 60% of which is voluntary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not going to suggest a solution. Instead, I want us to appreciate the implications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider a 1,000 employee company. The data suggests that &gt;60% of their churn is likely to be unplanned and unpredicted. The math suggests that 30 people will leave in a given month, or 360 over the course of a year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the last decade, talent management strategies have been a focal point. Bench strength conversations have been a topic of concern with millions of dollars spent on new technology. But if we peel the onion a little, what we find is the impact of the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/embracing-power-of-how\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">power of how<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3><strong>Companies need a better ROI for employee training<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training Magazine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trainingmag.com\/trgmag-article\/2017-training-industry-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 Training Industry Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that companies spent an average of $1,075 per learner last year, compared with $814 per employee in 2016. Companies also invested more time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/glossary\/employee-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee training<\/a>. Employees received an average of 47.6 hours of training in 2017, roughly four hours more than in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year-over-year increases suggests the amount of time and money dedicated to employee training will continue to rise. That\u2019s why we need to protect these investments. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3><strong>The challenge of voluntary employee turnover threatens the investment in employee training.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_160441370.jpg\" alt=\"employee retention\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_160441370.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_160441370.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/shutterstock_160441370.jpg?resize=600,400 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While companies strive to find strategies to stem the tide of unplanned employee departures,<\/span><b> the reality is that organizations must find more cost-effective ways to onboard new employees.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because employee onboarding effectiveness has a direct influence on <a href=\"https:\/\/biz30.timedoctor.com\/employee-turnover-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee turnover<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3><strong>How to curb voluntary turnover<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the past six years, we at WalkMe have focused on finding a better way to react to the growing challenges of employee onboarding and the rise of voluntary employee turnover. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are never going to be able to completely prevent poaching and other factors that lead to voluntary turnover, but we are be able to make transitioning into a new role a lot simpler and more effective. And with better onboarding, the likelihood of early employee turnover decreases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The ADP report suggests that compensation continues to play a significant role in turnover. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/5-new-hire-onboarding-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee onboarding effectiveness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contributes to job performance, which has a direct effect on compensation.
