Proponents of DEI and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diversity_(business)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">diversity in business<\/a> suggest that including the viewpoints of marginalized groups can drive improvements in areas such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced absenteeism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower turnover<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased productivity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Diversity as a concept is not limited to business, as we\u2019ll see below, but can also be applied to other organizations, such as government agencies and non-profit organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Equal opportunity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equal_opportunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Equal opportunity<\/a> refers to the idea that everyone, regardless of their identity classification, should have equal opportunities to, for instance, get hired, receive the same salary, be treated equally in the workplace, and so forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea emphasizes the fair and equal treatment of individuals, free of prejudice and discrimination. The intent is to make jobs and opportunities available to those who are most qualified, regardless of identity classifications such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethnicity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Country of origin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Religion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Proponents of this theory argue that equal opportunity fosters an environment of open and fair competition. This concept has been criticized on different grounds, such as the idea that it legitimates inequalities of wealth and income. Those who favor this view argue that equity, or equality of outcome, is the only way to create truly fair outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Equity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Equity<\/a> is concerned with fairness and justice, particularly as it is applied to areas such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Society<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Race<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In an organizational context, equity, fairness, and justice are often applied to many of the other concepts covered here, such as the practice of non-discrimination in hiring, gender parity in the workforce, income equality among identity classifications, and so forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Multiculturalism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multiculturalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Multiculturalism<\/a> is the idea that multiple cultural groups can cooperate and collaborate while still maintaining their individual cultural identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metropolitan areas are often considered multicultural centers, since many ethnic groups often coinhabit the same locale, while still engaging cooperatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many businesses, cultural and ethnic diversity has begun to increase, leading towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/what-is-organizational-culture\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organizational cultures<\/a> that are multicultural in origin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiculturalism differs from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polyculturalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">polyculturalism<\/a>, which rejects the idea of race as a social construct, claiming it has no scientific basis. Polyculturalism argues that ethnicity and ethno-nationalism in particular should be overcome through communication and the creation of a community culture, rather than \u201ctolerating\u201d other cultures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Culture and Change in Today\u2019s Diverse Workplace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/the-need-for-upskilling-in-the-modern-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modern workplace<\/a> is becoming more diverse and globalized, many professionals are adapting, not only by adopting modern business practices and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/glossary\/digital-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital tools<\/a>, but by shifting the organization\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img height=\"474\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/There-are-various-strategies-for-changing-an-organizations-culture_3466a0e0.jpg?w=1024&#038;h=474&#038;crop=1\" alt=\"There are various strategies for changing an organization\u2019s culture\" class=\"wp-image-18204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/There-are-various-strategies-for-changing-an-organizations-culture_3466a0e0.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/There-are-various-strategies-for-changing-an-organizations-culture_3466a0e0.jpg?resize=300,139 300w, https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/There-are-various-strategies-for-changing-an-organizations-culture_3466a0e0.jpg?resize=1024,474 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are various strategies for changing an organization\u2019s culture, and those strategies tend to be rooted in the political and sociological school of thought that one belongs to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Liberal change suggests that organizations should create a fair labor market, a meritocracy, that creates equal opportunity in the workplace. The core concept focuses on legal compliance and rules as a means of minimizing discriminatory practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radical change aims to overtly change the outcomes of business practices, rather than on rules and procedures. Quotas, for instance, can be used as a means of regulating racial diversity, income inequality, gender parity, and so forth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture change is a concept in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/5-types-of-organizational-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organizational change<\/a> management that focuses on altering the culture of an organization. This entails shifting the underlying values, beliefs, and social norms of the organization in order to align it more closely with a specific cultural archetype, such as DEI culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of DEI culture specifically, there are several tools used to achieve culture change, such as diversity training, diversity audits, and anti-discrimination policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other business professionals also emphasize the importance of other types of diversity, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/03\/teams-solve-problems-faster-when-theyre-more-cognitively-diverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">cognitive diversity<\/a>, which is not dependent on or predicted by ethnicity, age, gender, or other social identity categories. This concept emphasizes the diversity in areas such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Perspective, or the way individuals deploy their own expertise when facing new situations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowledge processing, or the extent to which people deploy new knowledge or generate new knowledge when facing new situations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of one\u2019s own stance on what makes an ideal organizational culture, it is important to recognize, among other things, that business metrics such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/glossary\/employee-retention\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employee retention<\/a>, job satisfaction, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/solutions\/use-case\/employee-productivity\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employee productivity<\/a> depend on how well an organization\u2019s culture aligns with the values of both the workforce and the company\u2019s missions, values, and vision.
