House at the University of Pennsylvania, and its first book-length report was published in 2004 \u2013 <em>Culture, Leadership, and Organization: The GLOBE Study of 62 Societies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That survey was conducted with the help of 170 co-researchers in 62 \u201csocieties\u201d (grouped into 10 \u201csocietal clusters\u201d) and a group of 14 coordinators and research associates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\u2019s three phases include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img height=\"474\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creation of research instruments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment of \u201ccultural dimensions\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analysis of leadership behaviors on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-employee-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employee performance<\/a> and attitudes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, we will look at some of these phases in more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The 10 Culture Clusters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 10 culture clusters, or societal clusters, included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Confucian Asia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Southern Asia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Latin America<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nordic Europe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anglo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Germanic Europe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Latin Europe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sub-Saharan Africa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eastern Europe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Middle East<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these was composed of several of the 62 aforementioned societies, which were usually geographic locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nordic Europe, for instance, included Denmark, Sweden, and Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one might expect, the cultural similarities and leadership preferences were greatest within each cluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as we will soon see, a main aim of the research project was to transcend these cultural differences and common <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.psu.edu\/global\/2019\/02\/04\/6-dimensions-of-culture-and-global-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">dimensions of culture and global leadership<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cultural Dimensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img height=\"456\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Early on, the researchers chose to address and establish measurement standards, in order to create a set of <em>cultural dimensions<\/em>, or \u201cindependent variables.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These dimensions included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Performance Orientation \u2013 How groups encourage and reward members for improving and excelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Institutional Collectivism \u2013 How societal and institutional practices encourage collective action and the collective distribution of resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender Egalitarianism \u2013 How a group minimizes gender inequality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncertainty Avoidance \u2013 How groups depend on rules, procedures, and social norms to cope with the future uncertainties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In-Group Collectivism \u2013 How proud, loyal, and cohesive people are in regards to their families or organizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future Orientation \u2013 Forward-thinking behaviors, such as planning and future investments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humane Orientation \u2013 How groups reward individuals for fairness, altruism, and similar behaviors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assertiveness \u2013 How confrontational, aggressive, and assertive people are with their peers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power Distance \u2013 How equally a group expects power to be distributed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These cultural dimensions can be thought of as and measured on a scale between two extremes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assertiveness, for instance, could be measured as \u201cgreatly non-assertive\u201d on one end and \u201cgreatly assertive\u201d on the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two sides of these dimensions were analyzed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Practices \u2013 How these dimensions manifested themselves in reality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Values \u2013 Which ones people valued\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, these dimensions \u2013 and their practices and values \u2013 were examined both in the context of the larger society and within individual organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Universal vs. Societal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the primary interests of the researchers was the universality of leadership values \u2013 that is which aspects of leadership were independent of culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is, researchers asked whether and which values were present worldwide, and which were specific to certain cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After surveying the 17,300 respondents in the project, they were able to distill these results into a set of 21 common \u201cleadership dimensions\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Administratively Competent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autocratic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autonomous<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Charismatic \/ Visionary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Charismatic \/ Inspirational<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Charismatic \/ Self-Sacrificial<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conflict Inducer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decisive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diplomatic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Face Saver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humane Orientation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integrity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malevolent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modesty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-Participative<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Performance Oriented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Procedural<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-Centered<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Status Consciousness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Team Collaborative<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Team Integrator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To generate these dimensions, researchers would pose questions about a set of attributes \u2013 such as \u201corderly,\u201d \u201ccommunicative,\u201d or \u201cinformed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the above \u201cleadership dimensions\u201d was composed of several such attributes and were seen as having a large influence on a leader\u2019s ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>GLOBE\u2019s 6 Global Leadership Dimensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The GLOBE identified six <em>global leadership dimensions<\/em>, or <em>culturally endorsed leadership theory dimensions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were considered reflective of how \u201cpeople worldwide distinguish between leaders who are effective and ineffective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the six \u201cglobal leadership dimensions\u201d was comprised of multiple \u201cprimary leadership dimensions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Team oriented<em> <\/em>was composed of team collaborative, team integrative, diplomatic, malevolent (reverse-scored), and administratively competent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participative<em> <\/em>\u00a0was composed of autocratic (reverse-scored) and non-participative (reverse-scored)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humane oriented was composed of modesty and humane oriented<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These six dimensions \u2013 along with all of the other aspects of the GLOBE research program \u2013 are explained in depth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/globeproject.com\/books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">GLOBE books<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Why the GLOBE Project Matters for Leaders<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/digital-adoption-leads-to-digital-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leadership<\/a> is elusive and it is difficult to find a universally accepted concept of \u201cgreat leadership.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different cultures, organizations, and individuals each have their own opinion on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what makes this research program so interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GLOBE project explores and analyzes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/traits-of-successful-leaders-digital-age\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leadership characteristics<\/a> across a wide range of societies, cultures, and organizations, rather than focusing exclusively on a single culture or country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes its findings very relevant and instructional for any
