{"id":17670,"date":"2024-06-26T13:51:22","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T13:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/?p=17670"},"modified":"2024-06-26T13:51:22","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T13:51:22","slug":"the-global-leadership-and-organizational-behavior-effectiveness-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/the-global-leadership-and-organizational-behavior-effectiveness-project\/","title":{"rendered":"The Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Project (GLOBE): Key Concepts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Project (GLOBE) is one of the most comprehensive, in-depth studies on organizational leadership to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, according to many, it <em>is<\/em> the most in-depth study on organizational leadership to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study encompasses a breadth and scope that eclipses other similar programs, for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The GLOBE study is truly global, expanding its reach across the entire world\u2019s cultures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It explored key traits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/effective-leadership-women-walkme\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">successful leadership<\/a> not only within each society, but cross-culturally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The study identified a set of \u201cculturally endorsed\u201d leadership traits that subordinates used to distinguish effective leadership from ineffective leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, we will look at a few important concepts in the cross-cultural study, which examined 62 cultures in an effort to better understand organizational leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Concepts of the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Project (GLOBE)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globeproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The GLOBE project<\/a> attempts to be as comprehensive in possible in its scope, conducting multiple studies with thousands of people around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the research from the early 2000s, participants included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>17,300 middle managers from 951 organizations in 58 countries, from food processing, financial services, and telecommunications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>62 societies, which were combined into 10 culture clusters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 14-member team of coordinators and researchers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The study\u2019s purpose, as the name implies, was to better understand leadership and organizational effectiveness from a global perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, the researchers developed attributes, dimensions, and measurement standards. These offered a set of common tools and metrics that researchers could use to analyze and report their results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These metrics included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>112 leader characteristics, such as modest, trustworthy, and decisive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>21 leadership scales, which were derived from the first round of surveys about those characteristics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 leadership styles, or \u201cculturally endorsed leadership theory dimensions,\u201d which were derived from the 21 scales<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the research, these six styles were the most universally valued leadership styles across cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, not all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/what-is-organizational-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organizational cultures<\/a>, societal cultures, or culture clusters placed the same value on each style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some varied more than others. However, across cultures, participants connected those six styles with effective leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>GLOBE\u2019s Six Leadership Styles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img height=\"474\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These styles included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Charismatic \/ Value Based \u2013 Leaders with this style value innovation, inspiring others, passion, and decisiveness, among other characteristics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Team-Oriented \u2013 As the name suggests, this style focuses on teamwork, cooperation, collaboration, a common purpose, loyalty, and so forth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participative \u2013 Participation-oriented leaders encourage delegation, equality, input from others, and similar traits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humane \u2013 A humane approach is centered around a concern for others, and these leaders have characteristics such as compassion, generosity, and patience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-Protective \u2013 The self-protective leader does things by the book, focusing on procedures, safety, security, saving face, and protecting groups and individuals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autonomous \u2013 The focus is exclusively focused on autonomy, independence, and individuality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned, different cultures perceive these styles differently when it comes to leadership quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, it is worth noting that these styles \u2013 or \u201cculturally endorsed leadership theory dimensions\u201d \u2013 do not make claims about what great leadership is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They explain how people across cultures distinguish between ineffective and effective leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Nine Cultural Competencies or Dimensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img height=\"878\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These nine dimensions are units of measurement that were used in the study.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They provided a baseline standard that the researchers could use to precisely articulate the similarities and differences between leadership qualities and styles across their research participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These nine cultural dimensions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Performance Orientation \u2013 Performance orientation is a competency that refers to groups\u2019 attitudes towards performance, how they encourage performance, reward it, and so forth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assertiveness Orientation \u2013 Assertive leaders are more willing to be assertive, confrontational, or aggressive in their dealings and relationships with others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future Orientation \u2013 Forward-thinking leaders plan, invest, and conduct other activities with an eye on the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humane Orientation \u2013 Those with a humane orientation encourage and reward others for activities that are compassionate, generous, altruistic, and so on\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collectivism I: Institutional Collectivism \u2013 The first type of collectivism values collective action and the distribution of resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collectivism II: In-Group Collectivism \u2013 This next type of collectivism focuses on pride, loyalty, and cohesiveness when it comes to families, organizations, and similar units<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender Egalitarianism \u2013 How a group minimizes gender inequality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power Distance \u2013 A group\u2019s expectations regarding equal power distribution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncertainty Avoidance \u2013 How groups minimize the effects of future uncertainty through rules, procedures, and behavioral norms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar units of measurement have been used in other studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are typically represented as a scale or a continuum. Each value will have, for instance, a value ranging from 0 to 7, indicating the degree or strength of the dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The GLOBE study is sweeping, wide-ranging, and thought-provoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It contains a great deal of valuable information that any leader can use to better understand leadership, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_Leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">global leadership<\/a>, and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study can offer a great deal of insight for professionals who want to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/use-case\/employee-productivity\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\"
