At the same time, however, many people don\u2019t have a clear definition of either one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One useful clarification of the terms comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/03\/restructure-or-reconfigure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Harvard Business Review<\/a>, which describes two types of reorganization:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restructuring involves fundamental changes in a business\u2019s activities and resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reconfiguration revolves around changing business units, without changing the underlying business structure itself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference we should be paying attention to, therefore, is perhaps not the difference between <em>reorganization<\/em> and <em>restructuring<\/em>. Instead, we should look at the difference between the two terms listed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each type of change, after all, has its place and its use case \u2013 and each carries different implications for the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, the greater the change, the greater the impact on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The organization\u2019s culture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workflows and business processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business strategy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors of the above-cited article point out that incremental changes such as reconfigurations and revolutionary changes such as restructurings are both necessary. Yet each type of change has its time and place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Reconfigure and When to Restructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One\u2019s own circumstances and needs should determine the right time and place to restructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Incremental changes, or reconfigurations, can be useful to keep up when the economy, the marketplace, and customer needs are changing over time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radical changes, or restructurings, can be useful to keep up with disruptive changes or to make major leaps forward<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few concrete examples of how this might look in the real world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a fast-moving market, such as today\u2019s digital economy, incremental changes can be used to keep up with the shifting business landscape<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organizational restructuring may be needed during disruptive changes and crises, such as COVID-19, which forced many companies to rethink their businesses and their operating models<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ongoing reconfigurations can also be used to optimize business processes and improve organizational performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restructuring may also be necessary during mergers and acquisitions, which often require major overhauls to an organization\u2019s brand, structure, and strategy, among other things<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision to restructure or reconfigure will ultimately depend on one\u2019s own circumstances and needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In either case, however, both are major decisions that will affect many areas of the organization. This is only natural, since these involve deep-rooted changes that will affect every level of the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the number and types of challenges faced during an organizational change, however, it is important to address those issues early.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few ways to do just that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Assess the business impacts of the change<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/career-development\/business-impact-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">business impact analysis<\/a> can be used to assess how the change will impact the organization and its operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These analyses, when used in conjunction with other tools, such as gap analyses, SWOT analyses, and change readiness assessments, can identify potential problems before they arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identifying those problems, in turn, can help change managers design more effective change management plans and risk mitigation strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Create a plan and communicate that to all stakeholders<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a solid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/solutions\/use-case\/change-management\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">change management<\/a> plan is essential \u2013 and communicating that plan to all involved is just as essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several benefits to providing a clear roadmap for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the one hand, for instance, a roadmap ensures that everyone knows their roles and responsibilities during the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, roadmaps can act as a communication tool, ensuring that expectations are clear. The result: no unexpected developments, less resistance, and more efficient project execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Invite participation from all stakeholders<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Total participation is one way to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkme.com\/blog\/change-6-strategies-overcome-resistance\/?t=21&amp;camp=change-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resistance from employees<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By inviting participation, employees feel heard and they feel like their opinion matters. This can reduce feelings of alienation and increase support for the change project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this strategy to work, though, managers must actually listen to employees \u2013 if they only hold meetings but don\u2019t use employee feedback, then this approach may backfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Obtain buy-in from leaders early on<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Commitment from business leaders is essential for success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many research firms have noted, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.prosci.com\/Change-Sponsor-Key-Activities-and-Common-Mistakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">change management sponsorship<\/a> can have a major influence on a project\u2019s outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In large-scale projects, such as organizational restructuring, this commitment and leadership is particularly essential.
